Influenza A (H1N1) - Swine Flu
Many of you may be worried about the influenza A (H1N1) Pandemic, commonly know as Swine Flu currently occurring throughout the world. Please do not let this affect your plans to travel to Together! 2009.
The World Health Organisation is not recommending travel restrictions related to Swine Flu, but advise travellers to protect themselves and others by following simple prevention practices that apply while travelling and in daily life.
The main route of transmission of influenza A (H1N1) seems to be similar to seasonal influenza. You can prevent getting infected by avoiding close contact with people who show influenza-like symptoms and taking the following measures:
-
avoid touching your mouth and nose
-
clean hands thoroughly with soap and water, or cleanse them with an alcohol-based hand rub on a regular basis
-
practise good health habits including adequate sleep, eating nutritious food, and keeping physically active.
Signs/Symptoms you should look out for are flu-like, including fever, cough, headache, muscle and joint pain, sore throat and runny nose, and sometimes vomiting and diarrhoea. You should seek medical care if they experience shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, or if a fever continues more than three days.
The majority of people who contract the virus experience the milder disease and recover without antiviral treatment or medical care
People who are ill should delay travel plans. Returning travellers who become ill should contact their health care provider. We strongly advise you take out adequate travel insurance if you are attending the conference from overseas.
If you would like to find out more about Swine Flu we recommend the following websites:
-

-
