The Australian Taxation Office is the Government's principal revenue collection agency, and is part of the Treasurer's portfolio. The ATO has important responsibilities, on behalf of the community, for the care of Australia's tax and superannuation systems and the Australian Business Register.
During times of natural disasters we assist people, businesses and Tax Practitioners by putting in place arrangements such as:
- fast tracking of tax refunds
- deferral of lodgment and payment obligations
- field officers visiting community hubs to provide tax information and assistance
- help with the reconstruction of tax records where documents have been destroyed, and
- personal visits to Tax Practitioners from our relationship managers on request.
The ATO's assistance is not limited to those people directly affected but extends to other people such as business owners whose main income is derived from the affected areas as well as volunteers and others associated with relief efforts. Volunteers, particularly those travelling interstate, may be given more time to meet their tax obligations.
